So blue, so sweet, so healthy, blueberries have become a true superfood of our times. Add a handful of blueberries to your breakfast to benefit your brain health. Below are the proven benefits of blueberries for brain function.
#1. Blueberries reduce dementia risk
Blueberries are rich in flavonoids that according to scientific studies can boost your brainpower and memory by improving blood circulation in your brain. Consuming about eight ounces of blueberries per day is beneficial to your brain activity and can help slow down brain aging.
#2. Blueberries generate brain cells
Besides flavonoids, blueberries contain significant amounts of antioxidants called anthocyanins that help your brain protect the brain cells from free radicals and generate new ones. As a result, your brain gets a boost in memory and becomes resistant to age-related memory loss.
#3. Blueberries improve mental wellness
Scientific studies prove that people treated with blueberries are less prone to mood disturbances. The super berry is rich in Vitamin B6 that plays a key role in producing serotonin that in its turn acts as a mood stabilizer. Therefore, if you feel blue for no reason now and then, add blueberries to your diet.
#4. Blueberries boost concentration
Have a small bowl of blueberries and just in five hours – the time necessary for your body to pull all the vitamins and minerals from the berries and to process them – you will experience a significant productivity boost due to the increased flow of oxygen to your brain.
#5. Blueberries fight Alzheimer’s
Antioxidants found in blueberries can also improve cognitive skills and, thus, reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. According to research conducted in the University of Cincinnati, people with early signs of Alzheimer’s disease show increased brain activity and memory improvement.
